"Chafe-Pro® for Chafe protection that is critical at the dock, at anchor, or on a mooring"

TMP MARINE PRODUCTS sells Chafe-Pro® for Chafe protection of your lines where it is needed. A substantial amount of research and development resources have committed to designing a line of products that maximizes the service life of our customers’ ropes. TMP Marine Products offers you the perfect solution - Chafe-Pro® - to prevent unwanted chafing over a cleat, cap rail, where lines may cross, or at the anchor roller. Chafe-Pro® is great for anchor lines or mooring pennants, where chafing through a line could result in the loss of your vessel. Dock lines are expensive, while extending their life with Chafe-Pro® is not.

What Do All of These Vessels Have in Common?

They All Use Chafe-Pro®

Chafe-Pro® is designed to be a cost effective means for preventing chafe abrasion to synthetic lines such as nylon, Kevlar®, Spectra, HMW-PE, and other polyethylene and polyester lines. Our Commercial Grade Chafe-Pro® is made from a rugged, highly abrasion-resistant nylon, and it is intended for use on yachts, tug boats, and ships; we also offer Yacht Grade models that are suitable for use on small craft. The proprietary-nylon weave was developed to provide a long life under the abrasive conditions that our products will endure and is ideally suited for the challenges of a harsh maritime environment.

Chafe-Pro® was designed to be installed, or removed from a line in a matter of seconds, with its patented attachment and locking system. Chafe-Pro® does not require lashings or lacings to secure it to lines! All of our models are downward compatible relative to line sizes, giving its user the highest flexibility on the market today. Chafe-Pro® is perfectly suited to combat the causes of cutting and abrasion encountered in offshore, mooring and tug operations. Since different applications have their own characteristic requirements, a full range of options have been developed, to protect our customers’ investment and ensure the longest service life for their lines.Chafe-Pro® is regarded today, by many, as the best marine chafe-protection device on the market.

WHY YOU SHOULD USE CHAFE- PRO

The reason is simple -

"To protect your investment in mooring, anchor, towing and ship assist lines"

Chafe-Pro chafing gear is the best protection from chafe abrasion to marine lines. It is why Chafe-Pro is regarded today by the maritime community as the best marine chafing gear offered on the world market. Don't be fooled by cheap knock-offs, or fire hose.

Extend the Life of your Lines

Methods to protect your lines are often made with a hastily conceived idea,
that isn't the best solution

TMP MARINE PRODUCTS says "Forget the old fire hose, scraps of carpet and canvas." These materials are often used because of their low cost and not necessarily because of their chafe resistant features. The continual movement of your vessel, impact of lines against dock walls, high frictional heat generated at the bollards and fairlead's, quickly degrades such protection materials, thus making them ineffective protection against line chafe.

Chafe-Pro® line protection offer yacht crews a tried and tested product to stop damage to expensive mooring lines, while keeping the aesthetic appearance of the yacht unaffected.

Chafe-Pro® is the Best Marine Chafe-Protection Device on the Market

HYDRAULIC - HOSE COVERS

Chafe-Pro® Hydraulic-Hose Covers are designed to protect hydraulic hoses from destruction caused by long exposure to UV radiation, the elements, from cutting, and chafe abrasion. Chafe-Pro® is constructed of a layer of tough non-porous ballistic nylon that is used in our commercial-grade marine chafing gear. The Hydraulic-Hose Covers provide additional protection from leaks as they will act as a barrier against a leak from spraying (i.e. forming a mist) which could result in a fire if such a mist was to come in contact with an ignitable source. Chafe-Pro® Hydraulic-Hose Covers will minimize the potential of leaked high-pressure hydraulic fluids from coming in contact with heated surfaces or nearby personnel. The covers offer the highest level of protection against abrasion caused by dock chafe and ultra-violet deterioration. They also help to protect fittings from rust and corrosion.

The unique patented system permits the installation of our covers on hose lines without having to remove a hose from its system. Chafe-Pro® Hydraulic-Hose Covers are attached to the hose with a “hook and loop” closure. The ends of the cover are secured to the hose fittings with two nylon tie-wraps. The inspection or servicing of a hose line is easy, as all that is required is to cut the nylon tie-wraps and undo the closure.

Both the installation and removal of a Chafe-Pro® cover is easily accomplished by an individual within a matter of minutes.

CHAFE-PRO® hydraulic-hose cover models are sold by length in units of inches.

TEST PROCEDURES and SPECIFICATIONS

Textile manufacturers use different types of testing to test their materials for abrasion resistance. Such tests have exotic sounding names like the Wyzenbeek and Taber tests. However, on many types of materials such testing is not valid. Specifically, these tests do not accurately reflect on those materials that are coated with a polymer. The reason for this is the abrasive surface used in the test, often an abrasive wheel, becomes clogged with the coating. Consequently, the wheel’s surface becomes smooth in a very short time and the resistance to abrasion of the tested material is never really tested.

At FJORD, we test the nylon used in our Chafe-Pro® units not only to fiber abrasion, but also through material destruction as well. We believe this is the only valid way to test the material used in the manufacturing of chafing gear. The Chafe-Pro® development team has devised a “real world” method of testing. In this test, a renewable-abrasive surface is used on an industrial grade sander that is applied at constant pressure as a function of timed intervals to the unit’s protective shield. This test is used to:

1) measure the amount of time until shield destruction

2) the temperature breakdown characteristics of the shield (i.e., time until shield meltdown)

In order to have comparative data relative to other abrasion tests, we also use the Wyzenbeek method.

STRENGTH vs. ABRASION RESISTANCE

Strength does not equal Abrasion Resistance

Chafe-Pro® is constructed using one of the most effective anti-chafe materials available today - Nylon. Most manufacturers of commercial marine chafing gear use nylon as the material of choice. Other materials, such as high molecular weight - polyethylene (HMW-PE), Kevlar, leather are not as effective as nylon in combating chafe abrasion. One of the primary uses for HMW-PE, and Kevlar is in the manufacture of marine ropes. All of which have great tensile strength, but as you already know, rope made from HMW-PE or Kevlar do not do well against abrasion. This is why rope manufacturers often coat parts of the line, such as the eye, with an anti-abrasion material or the user applies chafing gear where needed.

So why does the competition use such materials in the manufacturing of their chafing gear? The answer is very simple. It is often a by-product of other items they manufacture; as such, they make chafing gear rather than waste their excess material. These manufacturers try to sell the concept that strength of the material equals abrasion resistance. It sounds good, but it does not work that way!

The company specialize in the manufacturing of chafing gear - nothing else. Our patented hook and loop closure and non-slip system, used on all Chafe-Pro® units, have been copied by a few of our competitors for use in their own chafing gear. However, if you want to be sure that you are getting the best, and the ORIGINAL, in marine chafing gear look for the Chafe-Pro® label on all of our units. If our label is not on the unit, chances are you purchased a “knock-off.”

Effective marine chafing gear needs to have the following essential characteristics:

* First it must be abrasion resistant

Abrasion resistance is obvious. It must resist marine abrasion, such as that from piers, chocks, poor fairlead's, etc.

* Second it must be flexible

It needs to be flexible so that it can conform as closely as possible to a line’s dynamic deployed configuration (DDC). The DDC is particularly important for a line that undergoes a tight bending radius. Chafing gear that is semi-rigid (i.e., due to the use of polymer coatings, etc.) tends to develop cracks in the coating. This results in abrasion and delaminating of the coating material. This is why the manufacturers who use such materials sew their eye units to a shape that will conform to the shape of the intended eye. This would be ok if eyes maintained their shapes under load - but they don't! Because nylon is so flexible, it readily conforms to a line’s DDC. This is why Chafe-Pro® eye units are not manufactured to fit a particular eye’s shape, as all Chafe-Pro® units will easily conform to any line’s DDC under both static and dynamic load conditions.

* Third it must have tensile strength

Tensile strength, which has nothing to do with abrasion resistance, is an important characteristic in the manufacturing of marine-chafing gear. However, you are not going to use chafing gear to tie your vessel to a pier or to tow a barge or a ship - that’s what the line is for! Marine chafing gear must be strong enough to respond to the stretching that a line undergoes during surging. Preferably you want the chafing gear to stretch if the line stretches and to recoil if the line recoils. Those of you who have worked with nylon know that it has excellent stretching characteristics. Our entire line of Chafe-Pro® units is made from nylon material. Whereas, some of the competition uses other material such as HMW-PE, and Kevlar. Have you tried to stretch a piece of polyethylene or Kevlar lately?

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

All of FJORD’s Chafe-Pro units offer flexibility as they can be installed anywhere along lines.

1) If possible, lay the Chafe-Pro unit and line on a flat surface

2) Start at the edge and place line on the Velcro “hooks” in the desired protected area

3) Once hooked, begin rolling the line and Chafe-Pro together until the unit is snugly rolled up

4) Lock the Chafe-Pro unit by interlocking the Velcro edge units

5) To move the position on the line, simply remove the Chafe-Pro, adjust to the desired location and secure

TESTIMONIALS
“My crew finds the use of Chafe-Pro easy to install on our mooring lines. We have cruised extensively throughout the South Pacific islands this past year where many of our moorings were made to rough edged cement piers. We relied on Chafe-Pro to protect our mooring lines - it never let us down.” Capt. Al McClennaghan, Unlimited Master - Oceans ~ R/V Thompson

“We tried other chafing gear made from HMPE type materials and found it unsatisfactory for protecting our mooring lines from chafe. Our Chafe-Pro units have lasted more than two years and still have not shown any signs of significant wear.” Capt. J. P Friedman, Master ~ F/V Pacific Breeze

“I think this is an excellent product which, when used properly, can save the user a tremendous amount of wear & tear & money.” Capt. Gerry Cooper, Unlimited Master - Oceans ~ Tug Janet Catherine

“We tried Chafe-Pro in various applications and found them to be flexible, abrasion resistant, and easy to use…we found this to be an excellent product that conformed tightly to bends and resisted chafe well.” Practical Sailor ~ April 2009

“Since we began using your Chafe-Pro line protectors on our fleet of purse-seine fishing vessels, our captains have reported a significant reduction in line replacement and line splicing effort required due to chafe and breakage. Additionally, the chief engineers have been using your Hydraulic Hose Protectors out on deck to protect the exposed hydraulic hoses from chafe abrasion and also to protect them from the harsh equatorial tropical sun that they experience in the western Pacific Ocean. They tell me that they love the ease of application and its effectiveness in protecting the hoses from UV radiation. I would have no hesitation in recommending your products to other operators of commercial fishing vessels.” Capt. Jurgen Unterberg, Ph.D., General Manager, Pacific & Majestic Fisheries, LLC, GUAM
